in january i worked at naias for 2 weeks in a plywood cave, i made a lot of collages and my hair was super short.

  
in february i worked the chicago autoshow for 2 weeks & it was painfully cold. it snowed like crazy in detroit.

  
in march it snowed one last time & was warm enough to ride bikes the next week. i made a cake but i can’t remember why.

 
in april i prepared myself for judgement day, murdered out my nails & worked at future midwest.

     
in may i got sick, found a dead fox in the woods on belle isle, grew chives, took this sweet picture of bruce, made cookies, and we finally bought a table after living in our loft for 2 years.

  
in june i shot production stills for a mopar job, went to mercer beach & watched fireworks from our loft.

    
in july i went camping in elberta, went to the zoo, shot 10,000 stills for a stop motion video & bought a holga lens for my digital camera.

   
in august i went up north (marlette), made crazy good blondies & hung out with hawk.

    
in september i turned 27, shot production stills for a red wings shoot, ate a ton of cider mill donuts, and worked at the state fair of texas.

  
in october i worked the miami auto show, started shooting film again, and bought a bronica sq-a medium format slr. (!!!)

     
in november i worked at the toyota world convention in las vegas, started shooting the before interior pictures at the gar building, shot my first roll of film with the bronica, ate the best mexican food in detroit (taqueria lupitas) and started setting up a film processing “darkroom” in my bathroom.

  
 
in december i found a killer yardsale, developed my first roll of film with coffee, climbed a turret & shot stills of lots of dead birds at the gar, had a snowless christmas in white lake, and my hair was super long.

monster peanut butter blondies

these are the best thing i have EVER made.

¼ cup unsalted butter
1 cup brown sugar
½ cup peanut butter
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup flour
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon baking soda
½ cup toppings (i used semisweet chocolate chips, mini m&m’s & toffee pieces.)

preheat oven to 325˚f.
line an 8″ square pan with foil or parchment paper & spray that with nonstick spray.

melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. remove from the heat & stir in the sugar & peanut butter. allow to cool for a few minutes before adding the eggs & vanilla.

in a small bowl stir together the flour, salt, baking powder & baking soda. mix dry into wet, stirring until well incorporated. spread batter in the pan (i don’t know if you can even really call this a batter, it’s super thick, more like dough.) sprinkle toppings evenly over the top and press down a bit. bake for 20 to 25 minutes until a toothpick comes out with just a few crumbs. don’t overbake!

makes 12-16 blondies.

almond butter, oats & chocolate chip cookies

this is based on my favorite ccc recipe but with oats & almond butter added.

4 tablespoons unsalted butter
⅔ cup brown sugar, packed
¼ cup granulated sugar
½ cup almond butter (or peanut, whatever. i’ve always used natural so i’m not sure what will happen if you use jif, just sayin’.)
½ teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
¾ cup flour (any flour works, i’ve used both whole wheat & ap.)
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup oats
¾ cup semisweet chocolate chips

preheat oven to 350˚f.

combine flour, baking soda, salt & cinnamon in small bowl. melt butter in a large bowl on low in the microwave, or on the stove if you feel like getting a pan dirty. add the almond butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar and vanilla extract & whisk until smooth. add the egg & whisk until fully mixed in. stir in flour mixture with a spatula. stir in the oats & chocolate chips.

roll the dough into balls a bit smaller than golf balls & place onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper. give em some room, these spread a bit. (also fyi this dough is pretty greasy if you use natural almond butter, don’t be turned off though, the cookies are not greasy at all!) bake for 10 minutes or until light brown around the edges. cool on the pan 5 minutes before transfering to paper towel on the counter to cool completely.

makes ~2-3 dozen depending on how big you make them.

in january chris built a wall in our loft, i worked at naias for 2 weeks – this was my view, then i went to dc & worked that show for a week. i liked dc a lot.

in february i went back to detroit for a few days, and then i went to chicago for work, twice. there was a snowstorm when i tried to leave & my flight was delayed 8 hours.

in march i went to kansas city for work, i cut off all my hair in a hotel bathroom, then i shot stills for a music video. i made damn good granola, and i cut my hair even shorter in a different hotel bathroom in a different city. then i went to atlanta for work, twice.

in april i made cookies, shot stills for a shoot at the dia, and attempted to grow plants on my window sill.

in may i taught myself how to sew, started walking to work, and we closed org contemporary.

in june i shot stills for a shoot for garden city hospital, i ate blue ice cream for my dad’s birthday, something exploded in the stairwell at my loft, i went to the market, a lot. it was crazy hot & i shot stills of ryde motorcycles apparel for their website.

in july i hung a deer bust that chris painted white on our living room wall, it’s perfect. we talked like this a lot because chris was in maine for the summer. in july the sky looked like this a lot.

in august i gave my cat a haircut, flew to maine where my car broke down, was stranded in the city of gray for several days, stayed in many questionable motels, went to new haven, toured yale campus and the beinecke rare book library, went to new york, stayed in a ridiculous loft in manhattan, drove, a lot. made cookie when i got home.

in september i went to a tigers game, went up north & took photos with beth in the market.

in october i went to the cider mill and the leaves looked like this, i did wardrobe on a shoot for precor  and i got a new cellphone, it takes pictures of the sky that look like this.

in november it was super foggy in detroit, tj and i went to gibraltar trade center & it was awesome, and i went to la for work.

in december i went up north again, it finally snowed, but not very much, and my parents backyard looked like this on christmas.

best ever chocolate chip cookies

adapted from the bag, if you want the original recipe go here ’cause i changed it a lot.

for real though, these are the best. they stay soft for days & they’re not hard & greasy like the toll house cookies usually end up.

360 grams all-purpose flour (for a more in-depth explanation of this measurement read this)
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon cinnamon
½ cup unsalted butter
½ cup granulated sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 large eggs
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips (12 ounces)

combine flour, baking soda, salt & cinnamon in small bowl. melt butter in a large bowl on low in the microwave, or on the stove if you feel like getting a pan dirty. add granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract & whisk until smooth, with your hand. seriously. add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. gradually stir in flour mixture with a spatula. stir in chocolate chips. stick it in the fridge overnight.

preheat oven to 375˚f. drop by rounded tablespoon onto baking sheets lined with parchment paper. bake for 9 minutes or until light brown around the edges. transfer to paper towel on the counter to cool.

makes about 5 dozen.

jalapeno & cheese frittata, for one.
this is more of a suggestion than a recipe..

olive oil
2 eggs
salt & pepper to taste
2 tablespoons onion, diced
3-4 tablespoons red bell pepper, diced
1 tablespoon jalapeno, diced
1/4 cottage cheese

preheat the oven to 425˚. grease a small baking dish with olive oil. (i have this one. it holds about a cup of liquid.) in a separate bowl beat the eggs. season with salt/pepper. if you want add a tablespoon or 2 of milk or cream, i usually do but didn’t have any. scatter the veggies in the dish. this would have been even better if i’d sauteed them first but, i’m lazy. pour in the eggs. dot the surface with cottage cheese & black pepper. bake for 25-30 minutes, until the top starts to brown.

this is really good with pretty much any combination of veggie/cheese. i haven’t been grocery shopping in weeks so my options were limited. still so good!

peanut butter chip chocolate cake cookies

½ cup unsalted butter, soft
¾ cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
½ cup ap flour
½ cup whole wheat flour
¼ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt
⅓ cup cocoa
1 cup peanut butter chips

in a large bowl mix together the butter & sugar. i use these weird things called “my hand” and “a fork”, but i guess you could use a mixer. you’re done with the fork now, get a spoon. add the egg, mix, add the vanilla, mix. get a new bowl. stir together the flours, soda, salt & cocoa. make sure the cocoa is all the way mixed into the flour. add this to the sugar butter. mix, dump in the chips, mix. stick it in the fridge & come back tomorrow. pre heat the oven to 350˚. scoop the dough onto cookie sheets lined with parchment paper, about a tablespoon per cookie. bake for 9-11 minutes. let them cool on the sheet for a few before you move them to a wire rack to cool completely.

makes 24-ish.

the oregano died weeks ago. basil, on the other hand, is kicking ass.

lemon white chocolate cookies

um these were awesome. i made them for easter.

1 cup white sugar, divided
1 lemon, zested
½ cup unsalted butter, soft
1 egg, room temperature
½ teaspoon vanilla
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 ½ cups flour
¼ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
½ teaspoon baking soda
3 ounces white chocolate, chopped

mix together 1/4 cup of sugar with 1 teaspoon of zest. use your hands so the oil from the zest gets mushed all over the sugar. yeah, mushed. set aside. next, in one bowl mix together flour, salt, cream of tartar & baking soda. in another bowl mix butter & 3/4 cup sugar together. a fork works best. mix in the egg (use a spoon or spatula now). then vanilla, lemon juice & whatever zest is leftover. add the flour mixture a little at a time. stir to combine. stir in the white chocolate & then chill the dough for an hour or 2. now bake em. preheat the oven to 350∘. break up the lemon sugar with a fork because it’s probably stuck together by now. roll the dough into golfball-ish size balls & then roll in sugar. put them on a parchment lined cookie sheet & press down a little. they spread quite a bit so leave some room. bake for 10-12 minutes & then let them cool on the sheet for a few before transferring to a wire rack.

makes 24-ish if you make them just a bit smaller than the ones in the photo. i got 22.
